Decision of the Kakanj Municipality to cancel the public New Year' Eve celebration in order to donate the funds (8,500 BAM or app. 4,345 EUR) instead for medical treatment of its 7-year-old resident, encouraged the public to raise all the necessary funds in just 24 hours!
Seven-year-old Evelin Alajbegović has been living with brain tumor diagnosis for the past two months. He needed 130,000 BAM (app. 66,470 EUR) for surgery that can save his life. The campaign for his treatment mobilized the whole Kakanj where all businessmen from the Municipality of Kakanj met and discussed the ways to help, and the money was as well being raised at the city square. The fundraising campaigns were as well held at faculties in Sarajevo and Tuzla, and the donations were also being collected through phone line.
The news about this humane story spread widely. This is an excellent example how being responsible when spending money from the local budget can encourage the citizens to be responsible as well.
