Inmates from Penitentiary Correctional Institution in Niš, Serbia, have been setting aside money from their earnings in order to help the children in need who are starting school this year. As a result, 160 children from Niš got bags filled with notebooks, stationery, and art supplies, in order to begin their education with a smile.

411 prisoners managed to collect EUR1,250 (RSD150,000) during the campaign, which they also initiated. This is not the first time they are helping people in need: in the past, they collected funds for the food bank in Kosovo and in 2014, for people affected by the floods in Serbia. Most recently, they managed to collect EUR2,250 for the treatment of a 3-year-old boy diagnosed with cancer. This time, the help went to children living in difficult conditions or to families with a large number of kids.

Supervisors from the Centre for Social Work in Niš helped choose the families who needed the donation, and the two institutions continue to cooperate in various campaigns intended to help people in need, but also change the public perception of the prisoners.
